Explore the EarthBound, USA Blu-ray Edition: a documentary about the cult classic video game. Learn what's inside, who it's for, and if it's worth buying.
Quick answer
The EarthBound, USA Blu-ray Edition is a standalone documentary disc that chronicles the story of a fan site that became the cult behind one of the most infamous cult-classic video games.
What makes this Blu-ray different
Unlike many video game documentaries that focus on development history, EarthBound, USA takes a personal angle. It follows the creator's journey from running a fan site in the Web 1.0 era to dealing with corporate giants and his own adulthood. The film was 10 years in the making, which gives it a depth that shorter features lack.
Because it is a documentary about online community and personal struggle rather than a making-of, the Blu-ray does not include developer interviews or gameplay footage. If you are looking for a traditional behind-the-scenes look at EarthBound's creation, this disc will not provide that.
What you get on the disc
The Blu-ray Edition contains the feature-length documentary and likely additional extras such as deleted scenes or commentary. The catalog price of USD 12.54 (compared to USD 19.00) makes it an affordable purchase for fans who want a physical copy.
Decision rules for EarthBound, USA Blu-ray Edition
- Content focus: The documentary centers on the fan site operator's personal journey, not on EarthBound's development or gameplay. If you want a making-of, this is not it.
- Physical vs. digital: This is a Blu-ray disc, so you need a Blu-ray player or a game console that plays Blu-rays. No digital download code is included. Check your hardware before buying.
- Price value: At USD 12.54 (catalog comparison price USD 19.00), the disc is priced below a typical movie ticket. It is a low-risk purchase for EarthBound fans or documentary lovers.
