Learn how to care for your Sinister Shiokawa Mug so the heat-reactive design stays crisp. Simple steps for ceramic mug maintenance.
Quick answer
Hand wash your Sinister Shiokawa Mug with mild soap and a soft sponge to keep the heat-reactive artwork vivid. Avoid abrasive scrubbers and high heat in the dishwasher.
Why hand washing matters for heat-reactive designs
The Sinister Shiokawa Mug uses a special reactive coating that reveals the full scene when you pour in a hot drink. That coating is more delicate than standard ceramic glaze, so harsh dishwasher cycles or scrubbing pads can wear it down over time. Hand washing gives you control over temperature and contact, preserving the reveal effect longer.
Step-by-step care routine
- Rinse immediately after use: Run warm water over the mug to remove coffee or tea residue before it dries. This prevents stains from setting into the reactive coating. Don't let the mug sit with leftover liquid—dried residue is harder to remove without scrubbing.
- Wash with mild soap and a soft sponge: Apply a drop of gentle dish soap to a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Wash the mug in circular motions, paying extra attention to the rim and handle where oils collect. Avoid steel wool, scouring pads, or bleach-based cleaners—they can scratch the reactive layer.
- Air dry or pat dry with a lint-free cloth: Set the mug upside down on a drying rack, or gently dry it with a soft kitchen towel. Avoid stacking other mugs inside it while wet. Stacking can trap moisture and cause micro-scratches on the artwork.
