A step-by-step routine for cleaning ABS and PBT keycaps without fading legends or warping stems, plus storage habits that keep a custom set looking new.

Quick answer

Pull the caps with a wire keycap removal tool, dust them dry first, then wash in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Never soak keycaps overnight, never use alcohol or acetone on printed legends, and never put them in a dishwasher. Air-dry fully before pressing them back on.

Most keycap damage does not come from typing. It comes from cleaning the wrong way: a hot soak that loosens a stem, an alcohol wipe that lifts a legend, or a dishwasher cycle that warps a whole row. The routine below avoids all three.

It works for stock caps and custom sets alike, whether you are dealing with ABS or PBT, and it takes about 30 minutes of hands-on time once you have the tools out.

Know what your keycaps are made of before they get wet

ABS and PBT react differently to heat and chemicals. ABS is softer and more prone to shining and yellowing over time, so it needs cooler water and gentler handling. PBT is denser and more resistant to heat and wear, but it can still warp if you dry it on a radiator or leave it in direct sun.

If you are not sure which plastic you have, treat the set as ABS. Cooler water and a shorter soak are safe for both, so the conservative choice never hurts the caps.

  • Check the underside of a cap for a material stamp before washing a full set.
  • Dye-sublimated legends sit inside PBT and tolerate washing well; pad-printed legends sit on top and are the fragile ones.

Gather the right tools before you pull a single cap

A wire keycap removal tool grips the cap on two sides and pulls straight up, which is far safer than prying with a flathead or your fingernails. Keep a soft brush, a microfiber cloth, a bowl of lukewarm water, and a drop of mild dish soap within reach so you are not hunting for supplies mid-clean.

SIDES
sides

Do not use paper towels on the tops of caps. They leave lint behind and can micro-scratch a glossy finish over time.

  • Photograph the board before removal if the layout is unusual or you have swapped caps around.
  • Work over a towel or tray so a dropped cap does not bounce under furniture.

Pull caps gently and keep them organized

Pull straight up with steady pressure rather than rocking side to side. Rocking stresses the stem and can crack the cap's inner mount, especially on thin-walled ABS. If a cap resists, check for a screw or stabilizer clip underneath before pulling harder.

Keep rows separated in small containers or on a labeled tray. Reinstalling a 104-key set from a single pile is the slowest part of the job, and mixing rows makes it worse.

  • Leave stabilizer inserts and stems on the board unless you are doing a deep clean.
  • Set aside any cap with a visible crack so you do not accidentally reinstall it and make it worse.

Dust dry first, then wash with lukewarm water

Dry dusting removes the loose grit that turns into an abrasive paste once water is added. Brush the tops and sides, then shake the caps out over a bin. Only after that should they go anywhere near water.

Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and one drop of mild dish soap. Swirl the caps for a minute or two, agitate gently with a soft brush around the edges, then rinse in clean lukewarm water. Hot water is the single most common cause of warped stems.

  • Never soak overnight; 10 to 15 minutes is plenty for normal grime.
  • Skip alcohol, acetone, and household surface cleaners, which can dull ABS and strip pad-printed legends.

Dry completely, then reinstall

Shake off excess water and lay the caps face down on a microfiber cloth in a well-ventilated spot. Give them several hours, and longer for thick PBT. Pressing a damp cap onto a stem traps moisture inside the mount, which is how musty smells and corrosion start.

When you reinstall, align the stem and press straight down until you feel it seat. Do not hammer caps with your palm; firm thumb pressure is enough for a properly seated cap.

  • Do not use a hair dryer or radiator; heat is what warps caps.
  • If a cap wobbles after installation, pull it and check for a bent stem before forcing it.

Build a maintenance routine that prevents deep cleans

A quick weekly pass with a soft brush keeps dust from working into the gaps between caps, and a monthly wipe of the board with a barely damp cloth handles the rest. Deep washes then become a twice-a-year job instead of a quarterly emergency.

If you rotate between multiple keycap sets, store the off-duty set in a sealed bag or box away from sunlight. UV exposure is the main driver of yellowing on ABS, and dust settles into legends over months of open storage.

  • Keep food and drinks away from the board; crumbs and soda are the two hardest things to clean out.
  • Wash your hands before long sessions if you want to slow down shine on the most-used keys.

The seven-step keycap cleaning routine

  1. Identify the material: Check the underside of a cap for an ABS or PBT stamp and set your water temperature accordingly. When in doubt, treat the set as ABS. Checkpoint: if you cannot confirm the material, keep the water lukewarm and the soak under 15 minutes.
  2. Gather tools: Wire keycap removal tool, soft brush, microfiber cloth, bowl, and a drop of mild dish soap. Skip paper towels and any alcohol-based cleaner. Checkpoint: no wire puller on hand? Order one before you start rather than improvising with a screwdriver.
  3. Pull and sort caps: Pull straight up with steady pressure and keep rows separated in trays or containers. Set cracked caps aside instead of reinstalling them. Checkpoint: any cap that resists pulling may have a hidden screw or stabilizer clip underneath.
  4. Dust dry: Brush loose grit off the tops and sides and shake caps out over a bin before any water touches them. Checkpoint: if the brush comes away visibly dirty, repeat until it does not.
  5. Wash in lukewarm water: One drop of mild dish soap in lukewarm water, swirl for a minute or two, agitate edges with a soft brush, then rinse clean. Checkpoint: hot water is the most common cause of warped stems, so test the water with your wrist first.
  6. Air-dry fully: Lay caps face down on a microfiber cloth in a ventilated spot for several hours, longer for thick PBT. No hair dryers, radiators, or direct sun. Checkpoint: press a cap onto a stem only when the inside of the mount feels completely dry.
  7. Reinstall and reset the schedule: Press caps straight down until they seat, then brush weekly and deep clean twice a year. Store spare sets sealed and out of sunlight. Checkpoint: a wobbling cap means a bent stem, not a seating problem, so pull it and inspect before forcing it.

Desk gear that pairs well with a keycap care routine

  • Diver's Desk Mat: This official Dave the Diver desk mat was designed by Adam Rufino and measures 35x16 inches across, with a 3 mm rubber backing. A wide, stable surface keeps your keyboard from sliding while you pull caps, and the rubber backing protects the desk from dropped keycaps.
  • Mari's Picnic Bento Box: This official OMORI bento box was designed by Audrey Waner and consists of an outer box measuring about 6.8 x 5.1 x 2.5 inches and an inner box measuring about 4 inches long and 2.4 inches wide. The removable inner box is a tidy way to sort keycaps by row while you work, so nothing gets lost between washing and reinstalling.

Clean keycaps are not about scrubbing harder; they are about cooler water, less soaking, and full drying. Follow the seven steps, keep spare sets sealed and shaded, and your custom caps will hold their legends and finish through years of daily typing.
